Roatan Garifuna Culture Experience

Tour Overview

This cultural experience is designed for visitors who want to understand Roatán beyond its beaches—through history, people, language, food, and living traditions that still shape the island today.

A central part of the experience takes place in Punta Gorda, located on Roatán’s East End and recognized as the first Garifuna settlement on the island, established in 1797. The Garifuna are an Indigenous people with African ancestry who arrived in the Bay Islands after being displaced from their homeland, Yurumein. Today, Garifuna language, music, food, and traditions remain a vital part of life in the region.

Visitors also learn about the English-speaking Black Islanders (Creole) of the Bay Islands—another Afro-descendant community whose history is tied to English colonization, maritime trade, and the wider English-speaking Caribbean. Their story connects closely with the island’s past shaped by Spanish and English colonial periods, pirate routes, and Caribbean sea trade.

Throughout the day, the focus is on learning through place and conversation rather than performance.
