Roatán has two cruise terminals, and knowing which one your ship will use makes the first part of your day much easier. The terminals are in different locations, and the route to an independent tour operator is not the same at each port.
This guide is written for anyone visiting Roatán by cruise ship, whether you have booked with Roatan Visitor, another local operator, or are still deciding how to spend your time ashore.
Roatán’s two cruise ports at a glance
CRUISE TERMINAL 01
Isla Tropicale
Formerly Mahogany Bay
- Location
- Dixon Cove, Roatán
- Names used on itineraries
- Isla Tropicale, Mahogany Bay, Mahogany Bay Cruise Port
- Independent tour pickup
- Generally outside the controlled port area. The pedestrian route passes through the village and includes a sloped section near the exit. Follow your operator’s confirmed pickup location.
CRUISE TERMINAL 02
Port of Roatán
Coxen Hole / Town Center
- Location
- Coxen Hole, Roatán
- Names used on itineraries
- Port of Roatán, Town Center, Coxen Hole Cruise Port
- Independent tour pickup
- Exit gates and designated meeting areas vary among operators. Use the current instructions and exact location shared by the company you booked with.
Carnival Cruise Line publicly introduced the Isla Tropicale name for the former Mahogany Bay destination in May 2026. Some older cruise itineraries and visitor directions still use Mahogany Bay. Both names refer to the same port, not to two separate terminals. See Carnival Cruise Line’s announcement.
Arriving at Isla Tropicale (formerly Mahogany Bay)
After disembarking, follow the designated pedestrian path through the cruise port village. Continue toward the exit and main security entrance. The route toward the independent-tour pickup area passes through the commercial section and includes a sloped section near the port entrance.
If your tour company meets outside the port, continue through the approved exit and follow its own written directions to the designated pickup position. Depending on the company and current terminal access arrangements, guides may wait farther along the road outside the secure area. Do not assume your driver can enter the shopping village or collect you next to the ship.
Accessibility: If long walks, hills or uneven ground may be difficult for anyone in your party, discuss the route with your tour operator before arrival. Do not rely on an assumed shuttle, taxi fare or accessibility arrangement without confirming it.
Arriving at Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole
At the Port of Roatán, visitors walk through the Town Center port area toward an exit designated for their pickup. The walk and meeting arrangements differ from Isla Tropicale.
Not every independent tour company uses the same gate or kiosk. Different operators publish different exit instructions, including locations outside the security area. The reliable method is to follow the exit number, landmark and location pin supplied in your own booking confirmation. Never follow another company’s instructions simply because they worked for a friend on a previous visit.
If your ship is reassigned to the other terminal, contact your operator promptly rather than traveling to the previously agreed port.
How to find the correct driver or tour guide
- Confirm your port. Check your cruise line’s current itinerary, onboard announcements or ship app. Terminal assignments can change.
- Keep the meeting details available offline. Save the email or screenshot the instructions and location pin before leaving the ship.
- Follow your operator’s pickup route. The gate and the meeting area are not necessarily the same at every terminal or for every company.
- Verify the operator and your booking. Look for the agreed company identification and confirm the booking name with the representative before entering a vehicle.
- Contact the operator if you cannot find them. Stay in a safe, recognizable public meeting area instead of following an unrelated person who offers transportation.
Do ship time and Roatán time match?
Not necessarily. Roatán follows Central Standard Time (UTC−6) throughout the year, while a cruise ship may continue using the time of its departure port or another onboard clock. Know whether your operator’s pickup time is expressed in ship time or Roatán local time.
Your ship’s all-aboard time matters more than its departure time when planning an excursion. Allow sufficient time for the return trip and port security procedures. If the ship arrives late or the all-aboard time changes, notify your operator as soon as possible.
Can you book an independent tour in Roatán?
Yes. Local independent tour operators offer different types of experiences across the island. Check what the quoted price includes, the pickup and return arrangements, cancellation conditions, the identity of the operator and how to contact them on the day of your visit. Cruise-line excursions and independent excursions may have different contractual terms and response procedures if a schedule changes.
A reliable local provider should be able to explain the meeting point in writing, identify the tour contact person, tell you which items are included and plan the return around your cruise schedule.
Meeting your Roatan Visitor guide
For visitors who book directly with Roatan Visitor, we organize pickup according to the actual cruise terminal. Your guide is assigned after the booking is confirmed. Before your arrival, we send the guide’s name, relevant contact details, the meeting time and a location pin. The guide will wear Roatan Visitor identification and carry a sign showing the name on your reservation.
We are an independent tour operator. At Isla Tropicale, our team meets visitors outside the restricted port area. Coxen Hole has separate pickup arrangements, and we confirm your meeting instructions for that port individually. Our guide’s exact location in your email takes priority over general information in this article.
New direct bookings on our website require full online payment; the services and any optional extras are identified on each tour page. Our Booking Conditions explain cancellations, cruise schedule changes and the scope of our On-Time Return Promise.
