History & Heritage
Listen to the story of Punta Gorda and the Garinagu people.
Come to Punta Gorda to listen, learn, participate and spend time with the people carrying this culture forward.

A principle of reciprocity, shared responsibility and the understanding that community well-being is built together.
That principle is at the heart of what is taking shape at Satuyé Cultural Park: creating reasons to gather, learn, eat, listen and participate while helping cultural knowledge, local enterprise and economic activity remain within Punta Gorda.
Visitors are invited to be part of that effort.
Punta Gorda is the first Garifuna community in Honduras.
More than two centuries later, its history continues through language, food, music, memory and community life.
The weekend brings together knowledge that is shared through conversation, practice and time spent with the people who carry it.
Listen to the story of Punta Gorda and the Garinagu people.
Hear the language, learn words and understand its place in cultural memory.
Learn the roles of drums, maracas, rhythm and song with local musicians.
Learn about cassava, casabe and knowledge carried across generations.
Understand Punta through music and movement, then participate when invited.

The goal is practical: create opportunity from what Punta Gorda already has.
When visitors eat here, buy casabe and locally made products, participate in cultural programming and return with others, more value stays within the community.
The weekend is being developed with Microempresarios Satuyé, community participants and Roatan Visitor.
Come directly to Satuyé Cultural Park and spend part of your Saturday or Sunday in Punta Gorda.
Food, drinks, casabe, art, crafts and locally made products may be available for purchase.
Roatan Visitor can coordinate pickup and return transportation to Punta Gorda.
Weekend departures operate with a minimum of 4 confirmed passengers.
Prefer a fully coordinated day? Reserve the existing Roatán Garifuna Culture Tour with private transportation and a cultural program arranged in advance.
Tell us where you are staying, how many people are traveling and which Saturday or Sunday you plan to visit Punta Gorda.
In your message, include your hotel, villa, vacation rental or cruise ship, along with your pickup area.
UNESCO recognizes Garifuna language, dance and music as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2024, traditional knowledge and practices surrounding cassava bread were also inscribed through a multinational nomination that includes Honduras.
Recognition matters. What matters even more is transmission: people continuing to know, practice, teach and value what previous generations carried forward.
I for you. You for me.
Come to Punta Gorda. Learn with us. Participate with respect. Help create opportunity where the culture lives.
