Roatán Garifuna Heritage Experience

Experience Overview

This experience is centered entirely in Punta Gorda. Visitors spend their time in the community and at Satuyé Cultural Park learning directly from people who keep these traditions active in daily life.

Punta Gorda has been part of the Garifuna story in Honduras since the arrival of the Garifuna people to Roatán in 1797. The experience places that history in the community itself, alongside the language, oral tradition, music, dance, foodways and knowledge that continue to be passed from one generation to the next.

The experience is approximately six hours including private round-trip transportation from your cruise port, hotel or vacation rental. For cruise-day planning, we allow up to about one hour each way from the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole and generally about 45 minutes each way from Isla Tropicale, formerly Mahogany Bay, in normal traffic. Actual travel time can vary with traffic, port-exit timing and road conditions.

At Satuyé Cultural Park, the program is developed with Microempresarios Satuyé, a group of women from Punta Gorda who use the park for cultural activities, food preparation and their own small businesses. Historians, musicians, cooks, elders and younger members of the community may also take part according to the day's program.

The heritage walk uses the park's cultural spaces, traditional cooking areas, plants and displays to explain everyday life, food preparation and the ways knowledge has been carried within the community. Visitors are also introduced to the Garifuna language and oral tradition through words, stories, music and conversation.

The music workshop goes beyond hearing the drums. Visitors learn the roles of the primera and segunda drums, maracas, guitar, rhythm and song, and how these elements work together in Garifuna music. The session includes guided participation, followed by an introduction to Punta music and dance. Extended or dedicated music lessons can be arranged separately.

Casabe is part of the experience as cultural knowledge. Visitors learn about cassava, the traditional preparation process and the place of casabe within Garifuna foodways. UNESCO's Representative List includes the language, dance and music of the Garifuna, and in 2024 also inscribed traditional knowledge and practices for making and consuming cassava bread through a multinational nomination that includes Honduras.

Meals are purchased separately. When arranged in advance and according to the day's program, members of Microempresarios Satuyé may prepare Garifuna dishes at the park while explaining ingredients and preparation methods. Food, coconut water, traditional non-alcoholic drinks, casabe and other locally prepared items may also be available for purchase.

Each Visitor receives one bottled water and one non-alcoholic refreshment as part of the experience.

For cruise Visitors, pickup and return timing are coordinated around the ship's published schedule. The order of activities and the community members participating may vary with the day's program while the core cultural experience remains centered in Punta Gorda and Satuyé.
