Experience Overview

Experience Overview

Punta Gorda is more than a stop on Roatán's East End. It is the community where the Garifuna story in Honduras began in 1797.

The Garifuna are an Afro-Indigenous people whose heritage brings together Indigenous Caribbean and African roots. Their language, music, dance, oral traditions, foodways and relationship with the sea remain living parts of community life across Honduras and the wider Garifuna diaspora.

This experience is hosted from within that living culture. Your day begins with private transportation from your cruise port, hotel or vacation rental to Punta Gorda. Along the way, your local host introduces the eastern side of Roatán and the history that brought the Garifuna from Yurumein, the island of St. Vincent, to Roatán in 1797.

In Punta Gorda, you will spend time inside the community rather than simply stopping for photographs. You will learn about Garifuna history and language, visit the Satuyé Cultural Park area, meet community members, and take part in a hands-on introduction to Garifuna drumming and Punta dance.

Food is another part of the story. You will learn about cassava, coconut, plantain, fish and other ingredients that have sustained Garifuna families for generations. UNESCO inscribed the language, dance and music of the Garifuna on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and in 2024 separately inscribed traditional knowledge and practices for the making and consumption of cassava bread through a multinational nomination that includes Honduras.

A local lunch valued at up to $15 per Visitor is included. Regular meal choices may include dishes such as stew chicken or stewed beef, depending on the day's menu. Visitors who want to explore Garifuna cuisine more deeply can request premium traditional dishes such as hudutu with machuca, whole fried fish or specialty fish and seafood preparations for an additional charge. Premium dishes are prepared to order, so advance selection is required and the final supplement is confirmed before the experience.

You will also be introduced to cultural traditions such as Gifiti and learn how food, music, language and oral history continue to connect Garinagu across Honduras and the wider diaspora. Alcoholic tasting, when offered, is optional and separate from the included experience.

This is not a staged cultural attraction. Punta Gorda is a living community, and the people sharing the experience are part of the culture being presented.

For cruise Visitors, we recommend an early pickup after disembarkation. The East End route to Punta Gorda is paved, and the day is coordinated around the ship's published all-aboard time with a return buffer built into the schedule.

Your booking creates direct economic participation for Garifuna families involved in transportation, food preparation, cultural interpretation and community activities while supporting the continued transmission of cultural knowledge.
